Veterans need to know this

To those of you who are being told, and are believing, that it is the president who is against veterans, here are some facts: Please follow this progression of how veterans are being hurt and by whom.

In Aug. of 2011 President Barrack Obama promised the American Legion he would not “balance the budget on the backs of veterans.”
This being a promise by the democratic president, the GOP leaders who had vowed on the night of his first inauguration to not allow the president to get anything done no matter what, took notice.
* Nov., 2011 – Automatic cuts were triggered through sequestration, cuts that would take place in 2013. This sequestration was a demand by Republicans when the debt ceiling had to be raised in 2011. The GOP promised to shut down the government without the sequestration being Okd.
* Oct., 2012 – The national commander of the American Legion wrote an editorial explaining how those sequestration cuts would have a devastating effect on national security.
* Sept., 2013 – The American Legion told Congress about concerns over the maintenance of veterans benefits.
*Sept., 2013 – The Legion called of the protection of veterans benefits.
* Oct., 2013 – Failure to enact legislation to fund the federal government leads to a shutdown of the government, led by tea party stalwart Ted Cruz. Tea party members take credit for the shutdown and say they are “happy” with how they made it come about. During the shutdown 800,000 people are furloughed without pay and benefits for veterans and military retirees are threatened.
*Oct., 2013 – President Obama signs a bill that temporarily ends the shutdown and raises the U.S. debt ceiling only days before veterans disability compensation would have been stopped.
* Dec., 2013, The Legion hand delivers a letter to every senator demanding that reduced cost of living adjustments (COLA) for military retirees be removed from the budget bill.
* Jan. 15, 2014 – The Republican led House passes a $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill the removes COLA reduction only for the medically disabled military retirees. About only 96,000 of 903,000 military retirees would be affected.
Jan. 21, 2014 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) introduces an omnibus bill that includes the repeal of the COLA reduction provision .
Feb. 2014 – Senate Republicans stopped Democrats from advancing a bill that would have expanded healthcare and education programs for veterans.
In a 56-41 vote, the motion to waive a budget point of order against the bill failed. Democrats didn’t have the 60 votes needed to overcome the Republican roadblock.
Only two of the Senate’s 45 Republicans – Sens. Dean Heller (Nev.) and Jerry Moran (Kan.) – voted with the Democratic majority. That was obviously not enough to end the GOP’s obstruction.
The bill, the Comprehensive Veterans Health and Benefits and Military Pay Restoration Act, was quite expansive. Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.), a co-sponsor, posted an overview of the legislation, highlighting its expanded VA health care access, tuition assistance, and job training. These certainly sound like the sort of things GOP lawmakers could go for.
So why did Senate Republicans block it?
Some GOP senators said there were unsure of the pay-for provisions – helping veterans matters, but making sure the deficit isn’t slightly larger really matters – but perhaps the biggest complaint had to do with Iran.
Senate Republicans demanded a vote on their own alternative legislation, which included a provision to impose new sanctions on Iran, and which would imperil the delicate international nuclear talks.vets and
GOP senators want a vote on the sanctions, regardless of the consequences; Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) won’t go along; so the Republican minority blocked the bill on veterans’ benefits.
Yes, the president promised, and no he didn’t come through, but after reading this do you really think it is his fault that it didn‘t happen.
(All facts here came from the American Legion, who has not reason to lie about this.)?
